Some Basics to help you work faster
and more effective in Photoshop 5 and later

Render a Textlayer

render.gif (3735 bytes)

When you type in text with the text tool, a new layer will automaticly be created. This textlayer will not respond to any kind of filters except the layer effects. To apply a filter effects on this layer you have to render the layer first.

That is easily done by right clicking on the "T" in the layers palette and select render layer.

Add and remove Layers

addlayer.gif (1225 bytes)

To add a layer, click on the little icon that looks like a paper at the bottom in your layers palette... to delete a layer, click on the trash-can.

Mark the content in a Layer

layermark.gif (4063 bytes)

The fastest way to mark the content in a layer is: hit the Ctrl-key on your keyboard and click on the layer in the layers palette. This is very useful when you working with interfaces. I use it all the time.

Move several layers at the same time

linkedlayer.gif (1999 bytes)

Sometimes you have to move the content in 2 or several layers, but you don't want to flatten the layers.... click on the little palette right to the eye icon and you'll link all the layers you want to move.

Cool brushes

loadbrushes.gif (17676 bytes)

You can add some cool brushes by clicking the little arrow at the top right corner in the brushes palette and select Load Brushes. Find your Photoshop 5 folder (usually in the Program files/Adobe) and select goodies/ brushes and assorted brushes

Customize your palettes

You can easily customize your working palettes just by dragging one palette to another... In that way you won't have so many palettes to keep track on, and it will also take up less working space.

Layer effects

Layers effects is great and you can use it for a lot of things.... check out the Layers effect section to read more about it.

When you want to add an effect on a layer just rightclick on the layer in the layers palette and select effects.

If you want to copy one effect from one layer to another chose copy effect,  right click on the layer you want to apply it on and chose paste effect.

If you want to remove all effects on a layer chose clear effects.

If you want the effects, but you don't want to see it at the moment, chose hide effects.
